ACT Science Strategy: It Is a Graph-Reading Test

The ACT Science section is a data-interpretation test disguised as a science test. You almost never need outside facts; the answer is sitting in a figure or table, and your job is to find it fast. Treat every passage as a graph-reading exercise, learn to spot variables and trends in seconds, and the section gets a lot easier.

Forty questions, forty minutes, about 60 seconds per question. The passages look dense and the topics range from glaciers to enzyme kinetics, but the actual skill is narrow and trainable: read a chart, name the relationship, and pull a number. Memorizing biology will not save you here. Reading figures will.

Where Science fits on the 2026 enhanced ACT

Science is now optional and scored separately, like the essay. Your Composite (1 to 36) averages only English, Math, and Reading. The one mindset shift that fixes most of it

Stop reading ACT Science like a textbook. The intro paragraphs are scenery. The points live in the figures. Your default move on a data passage is simple:

Read every figure the same way, every time

Build a fixed routine so it costs you no thought on test day. For any graph or table, ask in order:

  1. What is being measured? Read the axis labels or column headers.
  2. What are the units? Grams, seconds, kelvin, parts per million. Wrong-unit answer choices are a classic trap.
  3. Which way does it go? As the x-axis value increases, does the y-axis value rise, fall, or stay flat?
  4. Are there multiple lines or series? Match each line to its legend before you read a single value.

Independent vs. dependent vs. control variables

This shows up constantly, and the wording trips people up. Keep it concrete:

Quick test: the sentence "we changed ___ and measured ___" fills in independent, then dependent. If a question asks which variable was held constant, look for the column that does not change between rows.

Describe the trend in one sentence

Most data questions reduce to a single relationship: "as X increases, Y ___." Train yourself to finish that sentence out loud. Increases, decreases, increases then levels off, no clear relationship. Once you can state the trend, interpolation and extrapolation are easy:

Here is a short made-up experiment. Read the table the way described above, then answer the questions.

A student dropped a fixed amount of effervescent tablet into 200 mL of water at five different starting temperatures and timed how long each tablet took to fully dissolve. The amount of tablet and the volume of water were the same in every trial.

Answer: B. Run the "as X increases, Y ___" routine. Temperature climbs 10 to 50 °C while time falls 92 to 34 s, every single step. That is a steady decrease, so B. This is the core ACT Science skill: name the direction of the trend in one read of the column.
2. Based on the data, the dissolving time at a water temperature of 25 °C would most likely be closest to:
Answer: B. This is interpolation. 25 °C sits between Trial 2 (20 °C, 71 s) and Trial 3 (30 °C, 55 s), so the time should land between 71 and 55, roughly in the middle: about 63 s. B fits. C (71 s) is the 20 °C value, not the midpoint, and the others are too far off. When a target value falls between two rows, the answer falls between their two results.
3. Which of the following was held constant across all five trials?
Answer: C. The setup states the amount of tablet and the volume of water (200 mL) were the same in every trial: those are the controls. Temperature is the independent variable (deliberately changed), and dissolving time is the dependent variable (measured in response), so A and B are wrong. Reading the passage's one descriptive sentence pays off here even though the rest of the answer lived in the table.

The Conflicting Viewpoints passage

One passage per Science section is different: instead of figures, it gives you two or more short arguments (often labeled Scientist 1 / Scientist 2, or Student 1 / 2 / 3) about the same phenomenon. This is the most reading-heavy passage, and the only one where you genuinely have to read the prose.

The whole passage rests on one thing: find the single point of disagreement. The scientists usually agree on most of the background and split on one specific claim. Lock onto that.

Read this one carefully but quickly: it is dense, yet the questions are answerable straight from the text if you nailed each side's core claim and the point of conflict. Pacing: do not let one passage sink you

At about 60 seconds per question, a single passage you stall on can eat your whole budget. If a question needs a figure you cannot decode in a few seconds, flag it, lock in a best guess (no blanks, ever), and move on. The data-heavy passages are usually faster than Conflicting Viewpoints, so some students do the figure passages first and save the reading-heavy one for last.
